Tupwood Gate takes part in Atrial Fibrillation Project

On Thursday 21st September Tupwood Gate Nursing took part in a project to screen residents, relatives and staff for Atrial Fibrillation. The screening was carried out by Jennifer Bayley, Cardiovascular Lead at the Kent Surrey and Sussex Academic Science Network.

Atrial Fibrillation is the most common type of irregular heart rhythm and means the heart is not working as well as it should. This could increase the risk of stroke by up to five times. If you have this, your doctor will aim to treat the AF and the stroke risk. Blood thinning medications (anticoagulants) are used to reduce this risk.

The aim of the project is to reduce the number of people dying or disabled by Atrial Fibrillation related strokes by optimizing the use of anticoagulants (NICE CG180).

As a result of our participation one person was found to have an undiagnosed Atrial Fibrillation and one person with another condition requiring attention. The testing equipment can be used in the community and hopefully help people before a catastrophic event.
